| Coastline |
 |
This description is for the coastline
which is not part of the Namib Naukluft Park and reaches from
the parks northern boundary right up to
|
 |
 |
| the Kunene River, the northern
border of Namibia with Angola. It includes Sandwich Harbour
in the south, the port city, Walvis Bay, the holiday resort,
Swakopmund, and the Skeleton Coast National Park stretching
from the Ugab river up to the Kunene river in the north. |
| |
| Swakopmund with its old colonial-style
buildings is a beloved destination both for tourists and Namibians.
Our coastline is also a favourite with South African holiday
makers. Swakopmund is the starting point of many interesting
excursions and activities. For example, a drive to Sandwich
Harbour, a lagoon bordered by high red dunes in the east and
by the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is a protected area, because
it is an important breeding place for many species of birds
and is, therefore, a good destination for Ornithologists and
nature-lovers. Sandwich Harbour is about 48 km south of Walvis
Bay. |

Driving in an easterly direction
from Swakopmund you will reach the Namib Naukluft Park, which
is famous for the peculiar Welwitchia Mirabilis, a desert plant
which can live up to 2000 years. This plant only has two leaves
in its entire life-span.
Another exciting and fun activity to be done in Swakopmund is
quad biking. You can go on different tours into the dunes between
Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. |
