| The Etosha National Park |
 |
The Etosha National Park is the
oldest national park in Namibia. It was founded in 1907 and
with an area of 22 270 square km, it is one of the biggest game
parks in Africa. |
 |
| |
The landmark characterizing the
park is the Etosha Pan, a white salt plain with an area of about
5000 km2, also called "the great white place of dry water".
The Etosha Park has within its borders about 114 different animal
species and about 340 different bird species.
Some of the animals species that can be seen in Etosha are the
black rhino, which is prospering in this park, the African elephant,
giraffe, zebra, a wide variety of antelopes, blue wildebeest,
and smaller species such as the jackal, bat-eared fox, ground
squirrels and not to be forgotten, of course, the big predators:
lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena. |
| |
| Some of the birds that can be
sighted in Etosha include ostriches, eagles, owls, and the Kori
Buzzard. Etosha is one of the main breeding places for flamingos,
which come in their millions during the rainy season to breed
on the vast salt plains of the Etosha Pan. |

| Etosha's vegetation varies from
small shrubs to grassland, to savannah covered with acacia trees,
thorn-bushes, and also mopane forests. The Etosha National park
is open to visitors throughout the year and is easily reached
on tarred roads. Etosha has two entrances: one is the Andersson
gate in the south of the park, coming from Outjo, the other
is the Lindequist gate in the east, coming from Tsumeb. |
| |
| The park has three public campsites:
Okaukuejo, Namutoni and Halali. Outside the park there are various
comfortable lodges,
from |
 |
| where day trips into the park
can be done, either by private car or through organized trips
by the lodges themselves. |
